A long time ago, a family of pilgrims
passed in Portugal and settled at an inn of Barcelos,
which is situated in Minho, in the North of
Portugal . As they took a huge snack and they made
little expenditure, the host, who was very greedy,
delivered them to the police, blaming them of having
stolen him.
The poor head of family, without
anyone who defended him, as he was a foreigner in
those places, was condemned to death.
In his despair, he went to his snack,
took a fried chicken, and to prove his innocence he
said:

It is so certain that I am an
innocent as this cock can start singing!
And what was a curious thing was
that the cock really sang!
Nowadays, the Barcelos Cock, made of
coloured clay, is known everywhere even abroad, and
it will remind this legend for ever.
